Paul Fong got a boost to his
primary bid to replace Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Sally Lieber in
District 22, adding the endorsement of the California Democratic Party
to a list of Democratic big-wigs on March 30. The decision was
ratified at the state convention in San Jose after a local caucus at
the Sunnyvale Community Center on March 13. The endorsement confirms
Fong's credentials as a contender.
"It says I'm a Democrat, a loyal, true blue Democrat," said Fong, a Foothill-De Anza Community College District trustee.
Fong secured 31 of the 39 votes at the caucus.
Among the other candidates, Dominic Caserta, a Santa Clara City
Councilman, received three votes, Anna Song; a Santa Clara County Board
of Education member, received one vote; and Kris Wang, a Cupertino City
Councilwoman, received none.
Caserta, 32, congratulated Fong.
"There's nothing I could have done. That decision was made before I was even interviewed," he said.
Fong, his wife, his 18-year-old daughter and his brother all voted for him at the caucus.
The Evergreen Valley College political science professor is well connected on the local Democratic scene.
"Paul has been very active in the party...and when you are active, you
make a name for yourself and you make a lot of friends who turned out
and voted for Paul," said Emy Thurber, a regional director for the
state party.
